What is soda firing?
Soda firing is a high fire vapor glazing process. My work is fired to cone 10 in a gas kiln for approximately 25 hours and at a peak temperature of 2300 degrees fahrenheit I introduce a mixture of soda ash, sodium bicarb, and calcium carbonate into the kiln atmosphere. As this mixture circulates and makes contact with the pots, it interacts with the silica and alumina in the clay bodies and creates a sodium silicate glaze. Clay body, where a piece is placed, how it is placed, what it is next to.. all factors affect the final look. This is a highly dynamic process that creates beautiful and unique surfaces!
