What is wood-firing?
Wood-firing is a high fire vapor glazing process that solely uses wood to fuel the kiln and bring the pots to maturity. Working in teams of 2-3, the kilns are fed wood around the clock and the pots are glazed by the melting ash that accumulates on the wares through the firing. My work is fired in two types of wood kilns: anagama and train. Anagama firings are anywhere from 90-110 hours long and the train kiln firings are roughly 40-60 hours. The goal temperature is about 2350 degrees fahrenheit!
