What is wood-firing?
Wood-firing is a high fire vapor glazing process that solely uses wood to fuel the kiln and bring the pots to maturity. The surfaces that result from these firings showcase unique and dynamic records of flame and ash.
Working in small teams, the kilns are fed wood around the clock and the pots are glazed by the melting ash that accumulates on the wares through the firing. These firings last approximately 40-100+ hours depending on the type of kiln with the goal being to achieve and sustain temperatures of about 2300 degrees. All aspects of these firings are time and labor intensive; it is only through the efforts of everyone within the firing communities that these experiences are possible! My work is fired in wood kilns located around the Kitsap Peninsula and beyond. I am so grateful to work within these groups of artists.
